Each Performance stores 16 Voices, which are playable from the keyboard itself or a computer/DAW in a variety of ways. The Performance section is one of my favorite features of the MX49.

“Patch” mode doesn’t exist on the MX49, and all voices are stored into what Yamaha calls a “Performance.” You get 128 user memory slots where you can store your own edited Voices and an additional 8 for drum patches. The Voice categories start with “AP” (Acoustic Pianos) and run the gamut from Keyboard (“KB” which includes Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Clavinet, etc.) to a wide variety or organs, guitars, brass, strings, woodwinds, synth leads-pads-comps, chromatic percussion, drums, sound effects, multi effects, and ethnic sounds. These sounds are actually called “Voices” by Yamaha and those Voices are spread out across sixteen (16) “Categories.” VCF, 2 LFOs, 2 envelopes, sync and cross modulationīased on the wonderful Yamaha AWM2 sound engine, the MX49 has what I can only describe as a fantastic array of sounds from which to choose. I’ve used the Yamaha MX49 personally since early 2015, and for certain, it has some absolutely fantastic sounds and features (including those pristine Motif-based sounds and full integration with Cubase).
